Introduction
With the growth of data rapidly expanding as well as strict compliance mandates
on how data and records are stored, there are few
too many options for storage media. Magnetic hard
drives or spinning disks are the best near-term
solutions and can be implemented inexpensively. However,
magnetic hard drives are prone to corruption, performance
degredation, excessive power consumption, non-compliance
with WORM based mandates and simply are not a good
solution for long-term storage.
Optical media for many years was the defacto standard for long-term storage,
however the size and speed of retrieval was always
an issue. That is where UDO or ultra density optical
storage fills the gap. UDO provides upto 60GB of storage
on a single disk with future enhancements to provie
up to 240GB per disk. Plasmon's caching capabilities
also allows for retrieval times similar to magentic
hard drives.
UDO™ (Ultra Density Optical) technology lies at
the heart of all of Plasmon’s archival solutions.
It’s the first storage technology specifically
designed
for professional and legal data archive requirements. UDO provides absolute
data authenticity for regulatory compliance or for any application where
archived information must remain intact and permanently
unchanged. Plasmon archive solutions
are used by thousands of organizations worldwide
across a wide variety of markets and applications,
including medical, financial, government, broadcast
and entertainment. They are available in a complete
range of configurations to meet the archive requirements
of small businesses to Fortune 500 corporations and
government agencies.
Archive Appliance Features
Permanence and Longevity
Plasmon media have a 50+ year life minimizing data migrations, virtually eliminating
media maintenance, and lowering costs.
UDO technology is designed for the future with a
roadmap that includes 120GB and 240GB media capacities.
Authenticity
True hardware WORM
(Write Once Read Many) media provides unmatched data
authenticity and allows you to easily comply with
industry and governmental regulations.
Security
UDO Guard provides
an additional layer of data protection for offline
media. By requiring a software key to gain access
to the media it presents a deterrent against unauthorized
access.
Secure, removable media give you a cost-effective
disaster recovery strategy.
Access
Fast, random access
facilitates timely retrieval of data for legal discovery.
Drives are backward read compatible to ensure long-term
data access and investment protection.
Low Total Cost of Ownership
Environmentally friendly
solutions with significantly lower costs for power,
cooling and maintenance.
Unmatched scalability and flexibility to grow over
time without disruption.
Low hardware and software acquisition costs.
UDO Features
Performance Optimized for Archiving: The access and read/write performance of
Plasmon drives is optimized for archive requirements.
A 35 msec seek time combined with a maximum sustained
read speed of 12 MB/sec delivers very fast random
access to your data.
Simple Integration:
Plasmon drives use an industry-standard half-height
form factor. They offer simple integration into robotic
libraries and computer systems as either an Internal
Drive or a stand-alone Desktop Drive.
Unmatched Media Longevity:
UDO media are designed for a 50+ year life minimizing
data movement frequency, virtually eliminating media
maintenance, and lowering costs.
Investment Protection:
Plasmon drives provide backward-read compatibility,
with a roadmap to 240GB. UDO2 drives can read UDO1
30GB media.
Flexibility: Plasmon
drives support both WORM and Rewritable UDO Media
formats in a single library or appliance.

Business Case
AMICAS, Inc. is a leader in radiology, medical imaging and information management solutions, providing its solutions to
radiologists and clinicians who use the company’s Web-based Picture Archiving
and Communication
System (PACS) to store critical patient data, including
MRI scans, ultrasounds,
CAT scans, mammograms and radiographs. Additionally,
AMICAS offers a
Radiology Information System (RIS), an enterprise
document management
solution, and comprehensive revenue-cycle
management capabilities — providing a
complete, end-to-end IT solution for imaging
centers, ambulatory care facilities and
radiology practices.
Historically, AMICAS
customers have relied on tape to store medical records and images.
In an effort to provide additional storage
options for its customers, AMICAS sought to
find an alternative solution that would meet
the regulatory compliance needs of its customers
and
provide permanence, authenticity and fast data retrieval
— all at the low total cost of ownership that is
critical for the
medical industry. After talking with
customers, AMICAS learned of Plasmon’s UDO™ (Ultra Density Optical) medical archive solutions that help businesses
mitigate risk by enabling data to be retained, rapidly accessed and authenticated throughout
its entire lifecycle. AMICAS found that Plasmon’s archiving solution offered not only
accommodation for exponential growth, but also UDO™ media that required less long-term
maintenance. Additionally, Plasmon’s cost-saving solution was a perfect fit for AMICAS customers,
since many of them face IT budget constraints.
Newman Regional Health
of Emporia, KS, was the first AMICAS customer to implement the Plasmon solution. Newman wanted
new, more reliable media that would allow for permanent copies of its
PACS images. |
